<br />CHAPTER 1 - INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />This Final Report was submitted to Bureau of <br />Reclamation (Reclamation) by BIO/WEST, Inc. <br />(B/W) in partial fulfillment of Reclamation Contract <br />No. 0-CS-40-09110 entitled Characterization of the <br />Life History and Ecology of the Humpback Chub in <br />the Grand Canyon. The report presents fmdings of <br />a fisheries investigation as part of Reclamation's <br />evaluation of Glen Canyon Dam operations. <br />Information contained in this report was collected in <br />36 monthly trips through Grand Canyon from <br />October 1990 through November 1993 and is <br />summarized in Trip Reports and Annual Reports for <br />1990 (Valdez 1991),1991 (Valdez et al. 1992), and <br />1992 (Valdez and Hugentobler 1993). An <br />Executive Summary and an Appendix were issued <br />as companion documents to this Final Report and an <br />electronic database is available from BIW or <br />Reclamation for data collected during this <br />investigation. Six supplemental reports were <br />produced in response to specific tasks or <br />amendments of the contract: <br /> <br />~ Supplement No. I: Data Collection Plan <br />~ Supplement No. II: Evaluation of Sampling <br />Design <br />~ Supplement No. ill: Photographic Record of <br /> <br />Humpback Chub <br />~ Supplement No. IV: Grand Canyon Fisheries <br />Integrated (GCFIN) Database <br />~ Supplement No. V: Development of a <br />Population Model for Humpback Chub (Gila <br />~ in Grand Canyon. <br />~ Supplement No. VI: Flow Routing Model <br /> <br />A complete list of reports and publications produced <br />during this investigation is included in Appendix A. <br />The reader is referred to the Executive Summary <br />and to Chapter 10 - INTEGRA nON for a synopsis <br />of findings. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />This investigation was conducted as part of the <br />Native and Endangered Fish (NEF) Studies (Fig. I- <br />1) of the Phase II Draft Integrated Research Plan <br />(DIRP, U.S. Department of Interior 1990) of the <br />Glen Canyon Environmental Studies (GCES) (See <br />Box 1-1). The DIRP was developed as a roadmap <br />to provide overall research direction and logic, as <br />well as technical information transfer to GCES <br />researchers, the scientific community, and the <br />interested public.
