This
Backwater had an area of 880 m2 with a maximum depth of 5.2 ft. By February 4, average surface ice
of 0.6 ft had reduced the area of suitable habitat to 650 m2. On February 25, flow through on section
of the habitat had reduced the area of the backwater to 250 m2. Despite substantial changes to this
habitat throughout the winter in was still considered suitable habitat.

7.0 SUMMARY

The unusually warm temperatures during the winter of 1993-94 created mild winter conditions, with very little
ice formation on the Green River. Of the 14 backwaters surveyed during this study, 5 became unsuitable
habitat during the winter. Of these five, four were affected by changes in river morphology and/or river flow,
one was affected by ice conditions (Table 7).

Table 7.

Summary of overwinter habitat suitability of 14 backwaters sampled during the Wmter Ice
Study, 1993-94.

Site # (River Mile)

Suitable Habitat
Through Winter
(Yes/No)

Reason Not Suitable

Reach 1

# 1 (332.0)
#2 (329.7)
#3 (327.3)
#4 (328.5)
Reach 2

No
Yes
No
No

Backwater lost due to channel morphology changes

Habitat change forming a side channel
Backwater lost due to channel morphology changes

#5 (314.7)
#6 (314.6)
#7 (316.2)
#8 (298.2)
#9 (297.2)
#10 (295.5)
#11 (292.5)
# 12 (293.0)
Reach 3

Yes
Yes
Yes
Yes
Yes
No
Yes
Yes

Habitat change forming a side channel

# 13 (255.8)
#14 (258.3)

No
Yes

Ice jam caused habitat change fonning a side channel

15
