Begun in 1989, the project
involved compilation of "key" information pertaining to rare fish species'
needs as compared to past, present, and future environmental conditions. The
rare fishes of the Upper Colorado River Basin have certain physical, chemical,
and biological habitat needs which apparently are not being met in certain
areas. The thinking was that if we could identify and quantify those needs,
then we would be better able to provide for them to recover the fishes. "Key"
information was considered to be that which could be translated into activities
which would help to recover the fishes, or which could be used to assess
impacts of existing or proposed actions likely to affect the fishes.
The compendium is divided into categories of variables thought to be important
to riverine fishes. For each variable, information was sought to define the
ranges of values which are beneficial vs. those which are detrimental to the
species. Armed with such information, one should be able to assess the
relative suitability of habitat at a given locale, assess or predict impacts of
proposed projects, and identify research needs to address missing information.
There are, no doubt, important variables (and interactions among variables)
that have been overlooked and are necessary to develop a complete picture.
Any thoughts you may have on important controlling variables and/or limiting
factors would be appreciated.
