5

Although the loss of side channels from 1963 to 1974 is slight. this
may represent a significant loss in potential backwater habitat associated
with these areas which may be significant for some fish species. Reduction
in the frequency of flood discharges may encourage vegetation encroachment
which stabilizes deposits, traps sediment. and reduces active channel
erosion (Petts, 1984). Our data suggest that the Green River channel
width is stabilizing and that future vegetation encroachment may be
slowing in the Split Mountain to Willow Creek area.

Copy to: 0-150
0-400
0-825
0-1522
0-1522 (Grabowski)
0-1524
D-1524 {(Pucherelli)
