.

DRAF1&

2.0 S'lUDY ARFA

.

This investigation was conducted on the Green River in the states of Utah and
Colorado. It extended from Browns Park (RM 385; river mile or distance from
the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers) through Dinosaur National
Monument to OUray (RM 248) (Figure 1). This 137-mile reach of river contains
three flatwater sections; Browns Park to Gates of Lodore (RM 385-365), Island
and Rainbow Parks (RM 334-327), and Split Mountain to OUray (RM 320-248). It
also contains three whitewater sections; Lodore Canyon (RM 365-345), Whirlpool
Canyon (RM 343-334) and Split Mountain (RM 327-320).

.

.

The study area was divided into three regions to stratify the area for
sampling. The upper region extended from Echo Park (RM 345) downstream to
Split Mountain (RM 319), the middle region is from Split Mountain downstream to
Jensen (RM 302), and the lower region from Jensen downstream to Ouray (248).

.

Access to the river was from eleven boat launches, including the Lodore Ranger
Station (RM 364.5), Echo Park (RM 344.2), Ruple Ranch (332.7), Rainbow Park (RM
327.5), Split Mountain Campground (RM 319.3), Park Service 'Bone Yard' (RM
.315.0), Ashley Creek ((RM 298.3), Bonanza Bridge (RM 289.6), Horseshoe Bend (RM
279.1), OUray Wildlife Refuge (RM 255.2), and OUray Bridge (RM 248.2). The
Lodore Ranger Station launch was used only once to gain access into the
whitewater section of Lodore Canyon. After electrofishing efforts in October
1986 yielded no squawfish or razorbacks upstream of Echo Park, Lodore Canyon
was abandoned as part of the study area, except for aerial tracking. Also,
following year 1, Echo Park was also abandoned as part of the study area,
because of road access problems in late winter and early spring.

.

.

.

.

.

3

.
