We initially attempted to calibrate the entire new portion of the
network, but found that our computed flows at Tia Juana Bottom
were not matching our recorded flows. From reviewing the flow
data of the Duchesne and White, it was determined that the major
peaks in flow at Tia Juana Bottom were attributed to the Duchesne
and White Rivers and not from flow released at Flaming Gorge.
Therefore, we decided to calibrate the total network in four
phases as follows:
1. Green River from Flaming Gorge to Tia Juana Bottom
excluding the flow of the White and Duchesne Rivers.
2. Flow of the Duchesne River only from the Duchesne
recording station to Tia Juana Bottom.
3. Flow of the White River only from the White River
recording station to Tia Juana Bottom.
4. Composite of 1, 2, and 3.
Using this approach, we were able to isolate reaches where
calibration was poor and concentrate on each of these reaches
individually. The method proved successful and we were able to
identify travel time problems associated with the Duchesne and
White Rivers.
After solving the travel time problem, the traces seemed to match
well at every point except where there was a major storm event on
the Duchesne or White Rivers. We finally came to the conclusion
that the major differences between the computed and recorded flow
at Tia Juana Bottom could be attributed to other sources, such as
localized rain storms which occurred between the gage and the
confluence of the Green River.
Disregarding the short term effects of local flows in the area
upstream of Tia Juana Bottom, the SSARR model as presently
calibrated does accurately reflect changes in flows from Flaming
Gorge Reservoir. Calibration of each node can be considered good
down to the Jensen gage. Calibration downstream of Jensen should
be considered as fair and does display some cumulative error which
effects the calibration for nodes downstream of Jensen. This
error is not significant and effects the timing of peaks more than
their magnitude.
VI. CALIBRATION RESULTS
Tables 4-5 and figures 6-8 display results for each of the sites
that are currently calibrated based upon differing releases from
Flaming Gorge. Printouts of calibration results are included in
Appendix B.
15
