.

STUDY ARFA

.

.

This investigation was conducted on the Green River from Browns Park
(river mile [RM] 265) through Dinosaur National Monument to the OUray National
Wildlife Refuge (RM 131) (Figure 1). This 134-mile reach of river coptains two
flatwat~r sections, OUray to Split Mountain Campground (RM 199) and qgtes'of
Lodore (RM 244) to Browns Park; as well as t;hree whitewater areas~ Lodore
Can~on (RM 245-225), Whirlpool Canyon (RM 225-208) and Split Mountain (RM 208-
199) .

.

The first phase of the project, which involved capturing and radiotagging
the fish, was conducted from the Lodore Ranger Station (RM 243.7) to OUray (RM
131). During the second phase, aerial radiotracking was done over the entire
study area. Additionally, aerial radiotracking was conducted on the Yampa
River from its confluence with the Green, upstream to RM 12; the Duchesne River
from its confluence with the Green River upstream to RM 2; and on the White
River from its confluence with the Green upstream to RM 1. This additional
aerial tracking was conducted early in the winter in attempts to locate fish
that could not be found in the study area proper.

.

.

~ccesa t9 the river was from nine locations, including the Lodore Ranger
Station (RM 243.7), Echo Park (RM 224.4), Rainbow Park (RM 207.7), Split
Mountain Campground (RM 199.5), Park Service 'Bone Yard' (RM 195.2), Ashley
Creek ((RM 178.5), Bonanza Bridge (RM 169.8), Horseshoe Bend (RM 159.3), OUray
Wildlife Refuge (RM 135.4), and OUray Bridge (RM 128.4). The Lodore Ranger
Station launch was used only once to gain access into the whitewater sections
of the study area during the first phase of the project. The remaining eight
launch sites were used at various times throughout the winter depending on
locations of the radiotagged fish, river flows, and road conditions.

.

Gaining access to the Rainbow Park and Echo Park boat launches requi red
travelling substantial distances over paved and dirt roads which are only
partially maintained or unmaintained during the winter months. Roads into both
locations were impassable during one sampling trip, in February, due to mud and
excessive snow depths. .

.

.

.

3

.
