Maintenance creel surveys were run in 1977, 1979, 1980, and 1981. These <br />were basically 6 month surveys (April through September) which were based on the <br />same schedule (Table 11) as followed during years of more intensive creel cen- <br />sus. <br />Estimates of harvest from the 6 month survey were expanded to annual estima- <br />tes for each species individually by the ratio of 6 month harvest to annual har- <br />vest obtained during the 1978 survey. The estimates were then added to obtain <br />the total estimated harvest, and the harvest was divided by the estimated <br />fishing pressure to obtain the mean creel rate. <br />A computer program was developed by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources <br />during 1979 to analyze creel survey data. The program was based on a similar <br />one used for creel data collected on Lake Sharpe, South Dakota (Schmidt 1975). <br />Although Wyoming and Utah crews collected creel data, Wyoming was responsible <br />for all the aerial creel survey flights, while Utah analyzed all the creel sur- <br />vey data. <br />Electronic car counters were installed at eight major boat ramps in Wyoming <br />and Utah during 1981. The counters were to be used as an alternative method of <br />collecting fishermen use data. The car counts were evaluated against the <br />fishermen use data collected during the 1982 aerial creel survey. <br />RESULTS <br />Analysis of the programmed creel surveys of 1978 and 1982 indicated a har- <br />vest of 155,775 fish in 695,817 man-hours at the rate of 0.22 fish per hour in <br />1978 and a harvest of 161,526 fish in 670,891 man-hours at a rate of 0.24 fish <br />per hour in 1982 (Tables 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17). <br />Data for the years 1979, 1980, and 1981 were obtained through the 6 month <br />(April-September) period. Comparisons (Table 18) through the same period with <br />1978 and 1982 information show a decline in harvest and creel rate through 1980 <br />and a slight increase in 1981. In all years, rainbow trout were the most common <br />sport fish in the harvest followed by brown and lake trout, although more lake <br />than brown trout have been harvested since 1979 (Table 19). <br />Returns of stocked rainbow and brown trout were low. Returns of rainbow <br />trout ranged from 3.11 percent to 5.61 percent and brown trout from 0.57 percent <br />to 1.79 percent (Table 20). <br />Total weight of the harvest (Table 21) ranged from 121,299 pounds in 1981 to <br />a high of 192,883 pounds in 1982. Return of weight stocked was somewhat better <br />than returns based on numbers. Rainbow trout weights returned ranged from <br />39.70 percent in 1980 to 72.36 percent in 1978, while brown trout returns ranged <br />from 11.92 percent in 1981 to 112.01 percent during 1978. <br />Fishing pressure and harvest varied among the three areas of the reservoir <br />during 1978 and 1982. Fishing pressure (Table 12 and 13) decreased in the <br />Canyon Area from 1978 to 1982, while pressure increased in the Open Hills from <br />1978 to 1982. The Inflow Area fishing pressure was substantially lower during <br />both intensively surveyed years than the other two areas, but showed the largest <br />-25-
