Our specimen was taken from the most recent significant
find of Cila cyrha. It appears that dam construction, causing
lower water temperature and fluctuating water levels, has created
impossible spawning habitat. These environmental conditions,
coupled with reduced numbers, have apparently trigb'ered Lybrid-
ization between G. cynha and G. elepans (also endangered) further
decreasing G. cypha's likelihood of survival.
Considering that G. cypha has virtually disappeared from its
former range, chances of lasting much longer look remote. The

offers a large river habitat with deep holes that may prove to be
a refuge for these struggling fish. Hopefully more intensive
sampling will r?veal similar populations in 9 ther areas of the
Colorado River drainage basin.
