THE U!h~IVER5ITY OF MICHIGAN
ANN ARBOR. MIGHIGAM. U.b.IR. 40iVia
MUSEUM OF ZOOLOGY
23 February, 1981
Dr. Glenn fl. Clemmer
U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Fort Collins Field Station
1300 Blue Spruce Drive
Fort Collins, Colorado 80524
Dear Glenn:
The two Gila from Coal Creek Rapi_dG (A~c, 1981-II:17) are no problem
though hardly ideal specimens for identification. Each has 9 dorsal and
10 anal rays, gill rakers on the second arch (left side, as right removed)
are 15 and 10, and the nu~chal hump development is within the ks.ow•n
variation for Gila cypha. Gerry and I see no reason why these are not
humpback chubs. We are returning these shortly.
The two Gila sent last summer (Acc. 1980-VII:21) are identified
as Gila cypha (spec. ~~2, D 9, A 10, gill rakers 15, good hump) and
a hybrid between Gila cypha and Gila elegans (spec. ~I1, with good cypha
counts but 20 gill rakers, typical of elegans).
The ten Gila from above Grand Junction (Acc. 1980-X:24) include at
least 6 hybrids between Gila cypha and Gila robusta and 3 Gila robusta.
Nine specimens have 9 dorsal and 9 anal rays, one has 9 dorsal and
8 anal rays. None is a humph ack chub.
We would like to retain these last two collections until we can
get them X-rayed. We have no film now (price has skyrocketed to
$3.00 per 7 x 10 sheet) but are ordering some. Possibly by /yiLy we
can get the required data.
Many thanks for your cooperation.
Cordially,
V,
Robert R. Miller
Curator of Fishes
RRM;cp
