' ~ ~ f
w
~2
Of the native fishes, the two suckers are still common. Lack of known
records for the razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) is perhaps explainable
on the basis of absence of suitable habitat, for this fish must have moved
through this part of the Colorado River since it occurs both in the upper and
lower parts of the basin. The minnows are represented by me~abers of the Gila
robnata complex (which includes G. elegans and G. cypha) but we did not find
specimens in our preserved collections that could be assigned without question
to either of those species. We did catch and release, at RM b1~.5 (about 2
miles below the mouth of the Little Colorado River}, a fish about 6 inches in
total length which may have been a humpback chub. This species has been collect-
ed in the area covered by our survey on a number of occasions in recent years, as
folloxs: Lees Ferry (1, 1963; 1 1971); Vasey's Paradise (1, 1968); near Little
Colorado River (!~, 1970-confiscated by Arizona Game and Fish Dept.); mouth of
Colorado River (1?, 1968); 3 miles below Little Colorado River (3, 1968); and
mouth of Bright Angel Creek (l, holotype, prior to 19I~2). This species is also
known (an incomplete skull) from Stanton~s Cave near Qasey~a Paradise. The
Colorado squawfish has been reliably reported from the Little Colorado River
near the base of Black Falls many years ago, but the only recent (post 1920)
"record" of which I am aware is a specimen said to have been caught at the
mouth of Havasu Creek in June, 1973, by an unknown fisherman, as reported to
i~l. L. Hinckley (who has the specimen, about 320 mm in standard length, ezamineci
by me on 25 July 1975) by Arizona Game and Fish Department.
The very cold water (!~7°F to 60°F ), of the Colorado between Lees Ferry
and Spencer Creek certainly precluded (this year) spawning of native species in
the main river. The best spawning sites are thus the warmer tributaries, especial-
L/
ly the lower. part of the Little Colorado River.
