Although quantitative data were not recorded, UDWR consistently
encountered striped bass during spring additional target ---
electrofishing from Reach 18 (approximately RMI 87) to Lake Powell,
June 3-5, 1987. During other additional target electrofishing efforts A
on May 9, 1987, UDWR recorded incidental notes on striped bass
relative abundance below RMI 16. One hundred fourteen striped bass
were enumerated while electrofishing RMI 9-5 (28.5 fish/mile) During
summer, striped bass demonstrated use of many miles of the San Juan
River. A total of three striped bass were collected in summer
standardized electrofishing: one between RMI 79.0 and 80.0; one at
RMI 103, and one between RMI 129.7 and 128.7. The only other species
encountered by UDWR during electrofishing operations, that has not
been discussed, was speckled dace, and they were rarely collected
(Table 1).
Eight different fishes were collected by UDWR during ~
electrofishing (Table 2). BOR collected only four different fishes
during spring electrofishing (Table 8). The diversity of fishes
collected by BOR greatly increased (10 species) during summer
electrofishing {Table 8). The change in diversity of BOR's fish
collections between spring and summer was probably due to several
influences. At least two influences were the increase in ~
effectiveness of electrofishing during lower water conditions in
summer versus spring and warmer water temperatures in summer resulting -
in increased activity of fishes. Almost all of the fishes collected
in summer, but not in spring, were warmwater species resident in Lake
Powell.

i

- 24 - ~
