STATUS OF MANAGEMENT OF THREATENED AND NONGAME SPECIES
OF THE COLORADO RIVER SYSTEM

AlUZONA

Bas published a Departmental list of "Threatened
Wildlife of Arizona". Staff includes two nongame
biologists with emphasis on federally recognized
endangered and threatened species. Has authority
to establish programs for management and preserva-
tion of all wildlife.

CALIFORNIA

Bas statutory authority to protect and manage
endangered, threatened, and rare species; has
entered into cooperative agreement with the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service. Has three full-time
wildlife biologists and two full-time fishery
biologists; expects to increase staff and expand
program as grant-in-aid money is received in 1977.

COLORADO

Bas the statutory authority to protect and manage
endangered and nongame species granted by S.B.142,
effective July, 1973. Colorado has an active pro-
gram for birds, mammals, aquatics, and raptors
carried on by five nongame biologists and one rap-
tor specialist. Also has publications and an
active educational program. Reintroduction of en-
demic species is part of the program.

NEVADA

Some money is available for nongame species, and the
priorities have been birds and mammals, especially
raptors and predatory mammals. Has statutory author-
ity for protection of all species of wildlife.
Presently has two nongame biologists employed by the
Department of Fish & Game.

NEW MEXICO

Reports money and authority available for management
of threatened, protected, and nongame animals.
Established Endangered Species Program in 1974, with
four biologists. Authority includes all vertebrates,
crustaceans, and mollusks.
