177. Holden, P. B., W. White, G. Somerville, D.
Duff, R. Gervais, and S. Gloss. 1974.
Threatened fishes of Utah. Proceedings
Utah Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters
51(2):46-63.
This. report catalogs 13 species and
populations of fish that are endangered or
threatened in Utah; they constitute 40 percent
of the native fishes in Utah. Definitions of
endangered and threatened species follow the
Endangered Species Act of 1973, PL 93-205. A
third term, "indeterminate," is used where
knowledge is lacking for placement in the other
categories, but the species is thought to be
rare. The great demand for water has altered
most of the unique aquatic environments of
Utah. Discussion includes status, description,
documentation, and factors influencing decline
for endangered fishes in the Colorado River,
Virgin River, and Bonneville Basin. Fishes
discussed include Colorado, Utah, and Snake
Valley cutthroat trouts; Colorado squawfish;
bonytail, humpback, Virgin River, and least
chubs; woundfin; Virgin River spindace; humpback,
June and Webug suckers.
PQPUT~AT~ON
ENDANG. Technical HYDROLOGY
Publication No. 53. 71 pp.
The northern Uinta Basin area consists of about
5,200 square miles (13,500 square kilometers)
in northeastern Utah and northwestern Colorado.
During the period July 1971 through June 1974,
a general study was made of about 1,500 square
miles (3,800 square kilometers), and a reconnais-
sance was made of about 3,700 square miles
(9,580 square kilometers). Apart of the
studies included evaluation of the geologic
formations as aquifers. The investigation also
included field work tha involved the analyses
of groundwater conditions and the relation of
the groundwater resources to geology, precipi-
tation, and streamflow.
7,6
