FISH
fishes of the West: causes, prospects and HABITAT
importance. Fifty-five taxa
are considered. Causes and times of declines
in species numbers are discussed. The philosophy
and reasons for preservation of endangered and
threatened forms is briefly summarized.
119. Dexter, W. In the
upper ten miles of the treated area, the inverte-
brate population has made a gradual recovery to
pretreatment levels. Below the ten mile mark,
the invertebrate fauna of the river was virtually
nonexistent until the spring of 1963 when a
small population appeared. Since then, fluctu-
ation in numbers and changes in composition of
the invertebrate population have been noted.
Except in a few backwater areas, the rotenone
treatment produced an excellent kill of fish in
the entire river. Downstream different fish
species have been observed since the treatment.
120. Dieffenbach, W. H. 1964. Taxonomy and selected ENDANG.
