HABITAT <br /> MOVEMENTS <br />Physical parameters of a habitat govern the WATER QUAN. <br />characteristics of microhabitats. Brown trout <br />were observed in a simulated stream environment <br />(flume) at three water volumes (1.2, 3.6, and <br />6.8 cfs). Resting microhabitats occupied by <br />study fish were within a velocity range of 0.4 <br />to 0.7 ft/sec. Other factors, such as turbulence, <br />light, water depth, spatial limits, directions <br />of flow, and cover also influence the locations <br />selected by fish. Conclusions based on this <br />research are 1) a positive reostatic response <br />to current, 2) a definite preference for water <br />velocities between 0.4 and 0.7 ft/sec, 3) a <br />strong positive thigmotactic response substituted <br />for a fright-cover response in the absence of <br />cover, 4) a strong photonegative response, 5) <br />areas of suitable velocity were usually near <br />the flume bottom 6) a resting microhabitat must <br />be above a minimum size. <br />17.
