- -3-

The Fish and Wildlife Service expresses its appreciation to the Bureau
of Reclamation, the Colorado Division of Wildlife, and the Wyoming Game
` and Fish Department for the information and assistance they provided.
DESCRIPTION OF THE AREA

The Little Snake River drainage in the project area lies astride the
Colorado-Wyoming state line. The basin is bounded on the east and south-
~ east by the Sierra Madre and Elkhead Mountains which rise to 11,000 feet.
The Sierra Madre Mountains constitute a part of the Continental Divide,
while the Elkhead Mountains separate the headwaters of the Little Snake
~ River from other streams tributary to the Yampa River.
The Little Snake, a major tributary of the Yampa River, flows westward
~ through the project area in aflat-bottomed valley flanked by benches
and mesas (Figure 1). The floodplain is from 1/2 to 2 miles wide.
Savery Creek, Beading at the Continental Divide in Wyoming, flows
~ south to the Little Snake River in a narrow valley and a canyon cut
through an extensive plateau. Slater Creek originates in the Elkhead
Mountains and flows north through a valley and canyon sequence to the
~ Little Snake River. The Slater Creek Valley, in.which Pot Hook
Reservoir would be situated, has a much shallower aspect than the
Savery Creek Valley in which Savery Reservoir would be built (Figures 2
~ and 3).
