Consequently, it can be
. safely assumed that many more elk were present than were actually
observed. These elk are a part of what is known as the Baggs herd.
Their winter range can generally be described as north of the state
~ line between Savery Creek on the west and the Medicine Bow National
Forest boundary on the east (Plate I). That part of the Baggs elk
herd wintering in the project vicinity provided a harvest of approxi-
! mately 500 animals and supported over 6,000 man-days of elk hunting
during the 1974 season. This was approximately 3 percent of the total
elk kill for Wyoming.
Mule deer, like elk, freely travel back and forth across the Colorado-
Wyoming state line in their seasonal movements. The Savery-Pot Hook
Project intersects a major deer migration route between Colorado and
'~ lands north of the proposed Dolan Mesa Canal in Wyoming. This project
lies-within a high-density deer area. Project lands in both states are
used year-round by deer, but there are many more deer on and adjacent
~ to these lands during the winter than during other periods of the year
(Figure 7).
~ Colorado does not have winter survey figures for deer in the
project vicinity; however, deer utilizing this area are hunted in
