Colorado 8022b <br />SEP 5 '1°~ <br />L <br />To: Regional Director, Region 6, Fish aad Wildlife Service, <br />Denver, Colorado ~ <br />From: Regional Director, Rockq Mountain Region <br />Subject: Draft Humpback Chub Recovery Plaa <br />We appreciate the opportunity to review the subject recovery plan and <br />offer the following comments: ' <br />Implementation Schedule: <br />It appears to us that Task 12, Determine status and location of available <br />and potential habitat; Task 13, Recommend areas for critical habitat desig• <br />nation; and Task 22, Determine population status aad level needed to main- <br />Irl taro secures populations, will depend upon completion of Task 11, Delineate <br />habitat requirements and limiting factors of humpback chub. Therefore, we <br />recommend beginning the former three tasks in the second or third year of <br />the program. Also, for funding purposes, it appears to us that Tasks 12 <br />aad 22 could be carried out as a single project. <br />Task 4, Determine taxonomy of Gila at various life stages, appears esseati, <br />to carrying out the humpback chub restocking objectives. We anticipate th~ <br />L-2 National Park Service funds ($5,000) will be available to begin this study <br />in FY 1979. It is assumed the study will be a single study through the Pi. <br />and Wildlife Service. <br />As increased energy developmeat,in western Colorado aad Utah is certain to <br />occur aad place heavy demands on upper Colorado Basin water, we suggest <br />~3 the recovery play explore methods of permitting this development in a mans <br />that will have miasmal impacts on the humpback chub and its habitat.
