RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
A total of 2283 fish was collected on the Yampa River in 1985 by
•
electrofishing, trammel nets, and angling (Table 1). Represented were 6
native species (3 families) and 5 introduced species (5 families). Natives
comprised 73% of all fish collected. Also included were two hybrid suckers,
•
crosses between the introduced white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) and
either native bluehead (Catostomus discobolus) or flannelmouth (Catostomus
latipinnis) suckers.
A total of 54 Colorado squawfish was caught in 1985 (Table 2). One of
these, a recapture with a green tag, escaped before the tag number could be
read. In addition, five other squawfish were observed (sighted) but not
•
captured. Of the 54 squawfish collected, 10 were recaptures including the
one which escaped (Table 3). Three of the recaptured fish were originally
tagged in 1981. Three humpback chub were collected within Yampa Canyon
•
(Table 4). No razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus) were collected.
A total of 1876 fish was collected during intensive sampling. These
included 2 humpback chub (Gila cypha), 9 Colorado squawfish, and 9 northern
•
pike (Esox lucius). The 373 fish collected during intervening sampling
included 1 humpback chub, 39 squawfish, and 32 northern pike. Special
(angling) collections yielded 34 fish including 11 squawfish, 8 northern
•
pike, and 15 roundtail chub (Gila robusta).
Spring sampling
The total number of fish collected during the spring (May 20-22, 26-30)
•
by all gear and sample types combined are as follows:
number of fish collected - 467 including:
number of squawfish - 30 (including 4 observed); and
number of pike - 38.

Intensive sampling sites included Lilly Park, Sunbeam, and Juniper
Springs. Native fish (flannelmouth and bluehead suckers, and roundtail chub)
