1
PREFA(~
1
'T'his recovery plan for the Colorado squawfish was developed by the
Colorado River Fishes Recovery Team. The team is an independent group '
of biologists operating under the sponsorship of the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service. -The .overall objective of this plan is to enhance and
stabilize Colorado squawfish populations and their habitat in the Colorado '
River drainage. This could mean reclassifying the species to threatened
status, or hopefully to delist if populations can be enhanced sufficiently,
Component parts of the recovery plan are an introduction to acxxua:int the '
reader with the characteristics and plight of the squawfish, a step-dawn
plan and narrative to detail specific actions necessary to elevate the
status of the squawfish, and a budget to suggest agency funding responsi- '
bilities.
The recovery team will devise and coordinate basin aide recovery activities, '
but it is the job of the various state and Federal agencies to implement
the recovery projects. Many specific activities in this first edition plan
are oriented toward data gathering. It is not always desirable to wait '
until all possible data are obtained before taking action. However, much
of the habitat restoration work alluded to in this plan must be based on
quantification of squawfish habitat requirements. As the tasks in the plan
are accomplished and new information becomes available, the recovery plan
will be amended to reflect the state of the art.

~'

u
ii '
1
