DRAFT-05/10/85
there are immediate short term activities that should be
implemented to assure conservation of endangered species
under the existing combination of man-made and natural
conditions occurring in, the tapper Colorado River Basin. The
recovery plan should define both near-term and long-term
activities.
3.1 IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGY
The recovery plans for each species could be defined in
terms of three sets of action items which reflect priorities
and time frames: near-term, intermediate-term, and
equilibrium period action items.
Near-term action items are high priority activities which
either must be completed soon to insure the conservation of
the species, or need to be initiated in the near future to
assure that the long-term recovery goals are- achieved.
Intermediate activities include continuation of some near-
term activities, and new activities based on the results of
near-term research and monitoring.
The equilibrium period. represents the condition in which
appropriate populations of endangered fishes are maintained,.
~ both in the wild and artificially. Endangered fishes are
~~ t~=~~ ` ~ _ .
~~ ~_ recovered to the point at which they are removed from the
.~ "- endangered list during the equilibrium period.
,.
~ ~.
~-`
In terms of time frames, the near-term, intermediate, and
equilibrium periods may overlap for a single species or for
all three. Table 3.0 provides a preliminary list of
activities that might be appropriate in the near-term,
intermediate, and equilibrium periods.
10
