6
3. Production and .stocking of hatchery-reared populations.
This would involve either the construction of a new
hatchery facility or the conversion of an existing one
for production and rearing of three species (50 percent
of facility for squawfish production, 25 percent each for
the humpback and bonytail) and research into their survival
requirements. Individuals produced in such a facility
would be stocked in selected areas to supplement existing
populations and for reintroduction into suitable habitat.
4. Develop the fishes into a publicly valued resource. The
FWS would begin an active education program to inform the
public of the status and importance of the fishes. A
directory of all resource management and protection
agencies or interest groups involved in the UCRB would be
compiled to promote interagency involvement. The FWS
would increase coordination with State resource agencies
with the goal, after downlisting, of eventually developing
and managing an experimental Colorado squawfish sport
f ist~ery.
III. POTENTIAL IMPACTS
In this section, we have attempted to list the various areas which
may be impacted from any or all of the alternatives and proposed
activities. Many of the impacts listed will occur under status quo
conditions or under all possible alternatives. However, they could
be expected to vary in degree and/or incidence.
- Water Quantity (timing, duration, and location of flows, State and
private water rights).
- Water Quality (sedimentation, turbidity, temperature, salinity,
etc.).
- Soil (compactiun, erosion).
- Vegetation (effect to riparian vegetation from flows or habitat
restoration, effect to terrestrial vegetation from ground
disturbance).
- Wildlife (increased access, ground disturbance).
- Fish (Federal and State-listed endangered species, nonnative species,
sport species).
' - Water-based Recreation (sport fishing, river floating).
