8
can be analyzed and information can be gathered from this analysis. Colorado
squawfish do laycbwn an annulus, as proven by a Colorado squawfish that was
recaptured twice after its on - .al capture. Scales were taken at both recantll- -
times (approximately one growing season apart), and when the mcond recapture
scale was analyzed it showed a definite annulus had been formed between the
recapture periods.
This study attempts to compare age aid growth data from Colorado aquawfish
collected within the upper Colorado River system. Hopefully the results of
this study will prove beneficial to the future preservation of the Colorado
squawfish.
Acknowledgments
Scales that were studied were removed from Colorado squawfish in the Green
River between 1964 and 1966 by C. Vanicek (Utah Cooperative Fishery Unit).
Colorado squawfish collected in the Lower Yampa River by personnel of the
Colorado Division of Wildlife during 1982 also had scales removed. Colorado
squawfish collected in the Colorado River by K. Seethaler(Utah Cooperative
Fishery Unit) between 1976 and 1978 were used for relative growth analysis.
Special thanks go to Edmund Wick and John Hawkins for assistance and
advice throughout the study. Thanks are also due to Dr. Bergersen, my advising
professor, for assistance throughout the project.
