Some of the goals of the project, as John mentioned, were #o pravide
a recreational experience for a wide variety of baaters and boating
cra.ft. Tbat would be an amenity far the local community, as well as
visitors. There would be a trai, a recreational facility for
Western State College, sirice they ha.ve an active prograai in outdoor
recreation, and for the students in generaL Tbat would be a
recreational atttaction for the tourists in this tourisC azea, particularly
in the.summerkime. And rt Just - it seems to fit with their overall
program of economic development.
As you've seen, the current status of the project, ttus significant
material has been hauled to the site this spring and one strucfizre is
near Gompletion and the rest are auticipated to be completed tbis fall
or this spring. Ifeh the reaeh was very appropriate for this praject in
terms of the adequate gradient. There's, from where we started
walking down to the end was over 8 feet of drop. The ]aud in this
sliver, the boitam of the river is owned by the County. There's great
access to it and avalable parking, particularly on the river right side.
T'he length of the course is simlar ta the projects i've worked on. It
would be the regula, tion length for a slalam competition and to have
five to six specific structures for whrtewater pla.y boating.
This project was designed, as you look in my reports, far a flow
range of a low of 250 cfs #o a bigh of 2,004 cEs. And as I mention in
that report, I feel that the prqject wM work the best arid attract the
most users at 2,000 cf's. That's because a11 vazieiy of paddlers and
users can use the project at that high flow rate. The waves work at
6eir best, eddies are the strongest; everything warks the'best, not
anly for the atl.yanced paddler af tbat level, birt also for the - intermediate and novice paddior. It's not as much as intimidating as
much as how people use it. The more novice may just surf back and
forth or go down the river, w$ere an advanced paddler ma.q stay m a
wave and cartovheel for hours. It's designed for all. types of craft,* including canoes, kayaks and rafts
and ather type of watercra$. I'd say inner-tubes, but you got to
either have a pretty thick sldn br a wet suit or somettring on beca.use
the water tencfs to be A little chMy m C'runnison ,
5imlar to other projects that I've desigined, I use the Weir [sp]
formula to determine primarily cbntral. And that determines the
width and the.depth at either low fl.ow or the high flow portions of
each structure. And those combinations of depth ond width with that
forniula determine either the depth of #Iow or the flow rate,
depending on which one you're looking for.
