Water Year 2000 EA Releases
Date s Amount Comments
6-11 to 6-19 400 cfs Releases were requested to keep flows between 1,000 cfs and 1,200 cfs, in
accordance with Service-recommended flow targets, for maintenance of fish/aquatic
community health and tern forage base and to promote tern and plover nesting at
higher elevations.
6-20 150 cfs Termination of the 400 cfs EA releases was requested on 6-20 in anticipation of
increased flows due to rainfall events. Although CNPPID was not required to
terminate flows until6-21 (24-hour notice requirement for EA requests), they started
reducing EA releases on 6-20.
6-21 to 6-24 0 cfs See comment above.
6-25 to 7-3 400 cfs Releases were again requested to augment flows, expected to decrease below 1,000
cfs within the week. At the end of June, flows at Grand Island had dropped well
below the 1,000 cfs mark. The goal of maintaining flows between 1,000-1,200 cfs to
meet wet or average flow targets or to encourage tern and plover nesting at higher
elevations was discontinued because too much EA water would have been required
to maintain that level. In addition, local rainfall events result in uncontrollable
spikes in flows above 1,200 cfs which would preclude any benefit for tern and plover
nest initiation. Augmentation of flows to reach the Service dry-year flow target of
800 cfs at Grand Island for maintenance of fish/aquatic community health and tern
forage base was pursued.
74 and 7-5 550 cfs An additional 150 cfs was requested because 400 cfs was not maintaining 800 cfs at
Grand Island.
7-6 to 7-21 400 cfs Releases were reduced in anticipation of higher flows predicted to occur for a short
period (less than 7 days) due to rainfall events. Terminating all EA releases in
reaction to short-term flow increases at the lower end of the managed area proved
problematic because of the 7-day time interval for releases from Lake McConaughy
to reach Grand Island.
7-22 to 9-5 550 cfs EA releases were again increased by 150 cfs to maintain the 800 cfs flow target at
Grand Island. By August 4, flows at Grand Island dropped below the
800 cfs target. Because the 550 cfs release was not maintaining the 800 cfs target
and additional precipitation or a decrease in irrigation demand was not expected, the
management objective was modified to include not only maintaining flows at Grand
Island for fish/aquatic community health and tern forage base, but also to reserving
some quantity of water in the EA for carry-over into the 2001 water year.
9-6 450 cfs EA releases were reduced in anticipation of the irrigation season ending and flows in
the river improving. Reductions were made on an incremental basis so irrigation
canals would not be adversely affected.
9-7 350 cfs See 9-6 comment above.
9-8 250 cfs See 9-6 comment above.
9-9 150 cfs See 9-6 comment above.
9-10 0 cfs See 9-6 comment above.
