? <br />? <br />(1,150 foot channel width x two miles) <br />110 acres of least tern and piping plover habitat <br />2,350 acres <br />The larger blacks include an additional 1,440 acres of habitat for whooping cranes, least terns, <br />and piping plovers. The total habitat recommendations include 14,000 acres in six segments and <br />15,000 acres in four blocks. This includes 24 islands for nesting least terns and piping plovers. <br />One of the first tasks of the Program will be to review the recommendations concerning <br />implementation of the block/segment plan, establish a plan that is acceptable for implementation <br />by the Program, and establish priorities, schedule,,and budget for implementation of the land <br />management elements of the Program. The Program's implementation plan will incorporate a <br />version of the block/segment plan that will a) require habitat acquisition and b) incorporate <br />current criteria for threatened and endangered species habitat. In addition, the Program will have <br />to make decisions regarding inclusion in the Program of off-channel habitat areas presently used <br />by threatened and endangered species. <br />2.1.2 Existing Habitat Land Management Efforts <br />Existing habitat land management efforts in the central Platte River area include efforts by: <br />National Audubon Society <br />Nebraska Game and Parks Commission <br />Nebraska Public Power District <br />Platte River Whooping Crane Trust, Inc. <br />U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service <br />Wyoming Water Development Commission. <br />Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District <br />Additionally, a number of other private landowners along the central Platte River commonly <br />undertake habitat restoration and management activities specifically to enhance habitats of <br />8
