Evaluation of Diversion Structures

navigate and the area of local habitat disturbance is relatively large. Because of its location '
adjacent to Highway 40, it also generates a fair amount of public comment and criticism. As
with the Deep Cut Ditch, a comprehensive monitoring effort through an entire migration cycle '
is probably warranted at this structure to determine its passage characteristics and, more
importantly, whether the endangered fishes are found this far upstream.
Other Upstream Diversions
n
J
The Shelton, Williams, Walker, and Marshall-Roberts diversions all exhibited moderate '
combinations of habitat disturbance and passage obstruction. While these structures are located
well above designated critical habitat, the adverse characteristics they exhibit could probably be
mitigated without resorting to unusual construction techniques. Depending on the outcomes of ,
performance monitoring at the Deep Cut and Cary Ditch diversions, some improvements in the
annual maintenance procedures at these diversions may be justified.

1
11

3-10 1
