Based on information developed during this study, it appears
that, assuming a sufficient flushing flow, proper temperature,
etc., discharges of a magnitude that would approximate optimum
habitat availability during the spawning window would provide an
improvement in hydraulic conditions for Colorado squawfish
spawning over existing conditions in most. years.
It should be recognized, however, that Colorado squawfish
spawning needs are but one small part of the life history
requirements for the species. Other factors, beyond our limited
understanding of Colorado squawfish ecology, map be of equal or
greater importance to the continued survival of the species.
Consideration must also be given to habitat availability for
adults, stream passage for migration, maintenance of downstream
nursery areas, competition from exotics, and so on.
8
