AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF
THE FISHES OF COLORADO
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this project was to com-
pile a detailed data base concerning the
historic and present distribution, biology,
and ecology of the fishes found in the State
of Colorado. One of the products of this
effort is this annotated bibliography, con-
taining 417 selected entries. The entires,
dating from the late 19th century to 1985,
include reports, publications, student
theses, .and presented papers referring to
169 fish taxa.
This bibliography is not intended to be
exhaustive. For example, literature dealing
largely with fisheries techniques and methods
has been omitted. Within this narrowed frame-
work, there have undoubtedly been omissions;
however, we believe that a representative
portion of accessible literature has been
included. Many additional state reports can
be found in 0. B. Cope's Index to Fishery
Publications of the Colorado Division of_
Wildlife.
The bibliography has been indexed separ-
ately by key word, county, and species.
Many key words pertain directly to fishery
biology and management, but key words such
as invertebrates, water quality, and lim-
nology reference additional information
about fish ecology. Given the large number
of drainage basins, rivers, streams, lakes,
and' reservoirs, we decided to list only the
principal drainages of Colorado as key words.
These drainages are the Colorado, Platte,
Arkansas, Rio Grande, and San Juan. Refer-
ences relating to specific river reaches and
other water bodies can be found by using the
County Index. In some cases, principally
with older (19th century) literature, judg-
ment was required in order to determine
geographic location for the County Index.
Incomplete latitude-longitude information
required an informed "best guess." Simi-
larly, name changes of small streams and
ponds made geographic designation and thus
county assignment occasionally difficult.
The Species Index contains taxonomic desig-
nations exactly as the author listed them.
We made no attempt to verify or update any
designations provided by the references. The
inclusion of museum collections from the
University of Colorado at Boulder, the
University of Michigan, the U. S. Fish and
Wildlife Service (Ft. Collins), and the
Smithsonian Museum -under the key word
"Collections" is to provide information
about the existence and purported contents
of sizable historical collections of
Colorado fishes.
