0
Another squawfish (648 mm, 1,980 g) was first captured and
PIT tagged (7F7F36616D) by Trammell (1991) at 176.9-rkm on 16 May
1990 above Taylor Draw Dam. It was then tracked from 16 May
through 5 July in Kenney Reservoir and was last contacted by
radio telemetry on 9 August 1990 (Table C1, Appendix). The same
fish was recaptured (701 mm) at.167.8-rkm on the 2 and 3
September 1993 just below the dam on the White River. It
probably migrated downstream over the dam in August 1990. It is
unknown whether this fish had migrated in and out of the White
River since its original capture or whether it has remained in
the river below Taylor Draw Dam where it was recaptured in
September 1993.
One squawfish (371 mm, 380 g) initially captured and PIT
tagged (7F7E611D1E) by Utah Department of Wildlife Resources
(Steve Craney, personal communication) at 52-rkm on the Green
River on 9 May 1991 was recaptured (512 mm, 925 g) at 167.8-rkm
below Taylor Draw Dam on the White River on 2 September 1993.
Another squawfish (744 mm, 3,600 g) also caught and PIT
tagged (7F7D036F20) by Utah Department of Wildlife Resources at
18.3-rkm on the White River on 18 May 1993 was recaptured (746
mm, 3,600 g) at 165.8-rkm below Taylor Draw Dam on the White
River on 9 September 1993.
a
Water Discharge and Movement
Spring runoff began 14 May 1993 and peaked on 23 May 1993 on
the White River (Figure 6). All 12 radio telemetered Colorado
squawfish (Figures 3-and 4, Tables B1 and B2, Appendix) began
their downstream migration from the White River and into the
Green and Yampa rivers about 32 days (d) (range 6-50 d) after 14
May. The water temperature averaged 140C in mid-May. Five
squawfish were found at the Yampa Canyon spawning site (10-35
rkm) around 23 July (range 9 July-12 August) or 38 d (range 24-58
d) following migration. Three squawfish were located at or near
the Desolation Canyon spawning site (251-290 rkm) 22 July or 44 d
. (range 38-57 d) after migration from the White River. The other
four squawfish were located between 221.0-338 rkm. All twelve
squawfish moved back into the White River near their original
pre-migration site about 17 September (range 16 August-29
October), 97 d (range 46-167 d) after beginning migration.
0 Wild Adult Colorado Squawfish Abundance
Seventeen (2 recaptured) wild adult Colorado squawfish were
caught in 1992 and 45 (16 recaptured) in 1993 as part of the mark
recapture study (Table C1, Appendix). Almost 700 of these were
captured within 0.8-rkm (167.0-167.8 rkm) of Taylor Draw Dam and
85% within 2.5-rkm (165.4-167.8 rkm) of the dam.
13
0
