a
RESULTS
0 Movement Patterns and Home-Range Fidelity
1992-1994 Telemetry Observations
Twelve Colorado squawfish (Tables B1 and B2, Figures Al-A12,
Appendix) migrated downstream in the White River to previously
documented spawning sites in the Green and Yampa rivers between
May and August 1993. These squawfish ranged in length from 409
to 743 mm (X=590 mm) and weighed from 1,000 to 3,750 g (X=2,380
g). All 12 fish migrated out of the White River, seven moving
upstream into the Green and Yampa rivers (Figure 3), and five
. moving downstream into the Green River (Figure 4). Each
squawfish exhibited home-range fidelity by returning to the White
River after migrating to spawning sites in the Green and Yampa
rivers. Several of these squawfish returned to the White River
below Taylor Draw Dam, and then re-dispersed within 4.3 rkm
downstream of the dam (Figure 5).
These twelve fish were tracked three times in 1994. Seven
of them were located at or above Taylor Draw Dam on 20 April.
Five of the seven fish had last been found on 29 October 1993
between 153.7-165.0 rkm of the White River and had moved back
upstream to the dam (167.8 rkm). The other two fish, relocated
upstream of Taylor Draw Dam on the 9 and 14 September 1993 and
last tracked on 22 September 1993 between 173.8-177.0 rkm, had
moved further upstream between 180:3-185.1 rkm. The five fish
not located in April 1994, were last contacted 22 September and
29 October 1993 between 141.6-165.0 rkm on the White River. On 1
and 13 July 1994 the seven fish located in April were found again
together with five additional fish either upstream of the Green
and White river confluence in the Green (397.5-532.7 rkm) and
Yampa (9.7-77.2 rkm) rivers or downstream in the Desolation
Canyon of the Green River (247.8-412.0 rkm). All twelve fish
returned to the same spawning areas in 1994 (Figures 3 and 4).
0 Mark and Recapture Movement Patterns
Four Colorado squawfish (Table B1, Appendix) that were
recaptured in the White River in 1993 displayed wide ranging
movement patterns. One squawfish (547 mm), initially captured
. and Carlin tagged (W 1746) by Colorado Division of Wildlife (Bill
Elmblad, personal communication) at 161.1-rkm on the White River
below Taylor Draw Dam on 16 May 1988, was recaptured (614 mm,
2,400 g) at 166.6-rkm below Taylor Draw Dam on the White River on
10 September 1993.
r
9
0
