0
Approximately 97,000 hatchery-reared, fingerling Colorado
squawfish were stocked into Kenney Reservoir from 1988-1990 in an
attempt to establish a Colorado squawfish sportfishery (Trammel
1991) by the Colorado Division of Wildlife (CDW). These fish
either moved over Taylor Draw Dam and dispersed downstream into
the White River or survival of these fish in the reservoir was
low. Very few of these fish have been captured in subsequent
sampling efforts in the reservoir or downstream of the dam in the
White River.
An alternative to establishing a squawfish hatchery-stocking
program upstream of a river barrier is to provide fish passage to
the existing wild squawfish population. Upstream passage is
currently being proposed for the Redlands Diversion on the
Gunnison River, Colorado. However, it is unknown whether adult
Colorado squawfish would utilize a passage facility and move
upstream past Taylor Draw Dam.
There were three major objectives to this study: 1)
determine the status of the wild adult Colorado squawfish
occupying the tail-waters downstream of Taylor Draw Dam, 2)
assess any species composition changes over time in the White
River, 3) conduct a follow-up evaluation of the hatchery-reared
Colorado squawfish stocked in Kenney Reservoir. Specific study
tasks were to:
o determine the abundance, movement, and home-range
preference of adult Colorado squawfish congregating
downstream of Taylor Draw Dam and upstream of Kenney
Reservoir.
o determine the seasonal macro-habitat use of Colorado
squawfish in the White River.
0
o determine changes in species composition, relative
abundance, and distribution of native and non-native
fishes in the White River downstream of Taylor Draw
Dam.
o determine the presence, abundance, growth, and habitat
use of hatchery-reared Colorado squawfish in the White
River.
11
0
2
0
