a
upstream of Kenney Reservoir also exhibited home range fidelity
by remaining in this area of the White River for 1-2 months prior
to their spawning migration. If a fish passage facility were
located at Taylor Draw Dam, it is probable adult squawfish would
use it to access historic home range upstream of the reservoir.
These twelve fish were tracked three times in 1994. Seven
of them were located at or above Taylor Draw Dam on 20 April.
Five of the seven fish had last been found on 29 October 1993
between 153.7-165.0 rkm of the White River and had moved back
upstream to the dam (167.8 rkm). The other two fish, relocated
upstream of Taylor Draw Dam on the 9 and 14 September 1993 and
last tracked on 22 September 1993 between 173.8-177.0 rkm, had
moved further upstream between 180.3-185.1 rkm. The five fish
not located in April 1994, were last contacted 22 September and
29 October 1993 between 141.6-165.0 rkm on the White River. On 1
and 13 July 1994 the seven fish located in April were found again
together with five additional fish either upstream of the Green
and White river confluence in the Green (397.5-532.7 rkm) and
Yampa (9.7-77.2 rkm) rivers or downstream in the Desolation
Canyon of the Green River (247.8-412.0 rkm). All twelve fish
returned to the same spawning areas in 1994.
The majority of squawfish were found in main channel run
habitat throughout the year under cut-bank cover. Most squawfish
were found primarily over gravel type substrate. The water
depths at which squawfish were found ranged from 0.46-4.57 m (X
=2.40 m) in autumn, 0.61-4.57 m (X=4.13 m) in winter, 0.46-4.57 m
(X=1.23 m) in spring, and from 0.46-7.62 m (X=1.91 m) during the
summer months. The water temperatures at which squawfish were
found ranged from 7-160C in autumn, 12-140C in spring, and 15-
280C in summer. No temperature readings were taken during the
winter, but were assumed to be at or near 0°C.
There were 2,371 fish captured from the White River by beach
seine, trammel net, and electrofishing in 1992 and 2,285 fish in
1993. Wild adult squawfish made up less than 1.0% of the total
species composition. Species composition in 1992 was 56% endemic
and 44% exotic in the Colorado reach of the White River, and 26%
endemic and 75% exotic in the Utah reach. The species
composition in 1993 was 67% endemic and 33% exotic in the
Colorado reach and 45% endemic and 55% exotic in the Utah reach.
Before completion (December 1984) of Taylor Draw Dam, exotic
species were dominant only in the Utah reach of the White River.
Endemic species were dominant in the Colorado reach of the river.
After the completion of the dam, exotic species moved upstream
and became dominant in the Utah reach and lower portion of the
Colorado reach and in Kenney Reservoir. Endemic species remained
dominate in approximately 40-rkm reach downstream of the dam. No
species composition work was conducted upstream of Kenney
Reservoir in 1992 or 1993.
xi
0
