Corrected records were used to develop tables of ownership by owner and river mile. The records were used to develop a color-coded land ownership map on USGS 7.5 Minute Quadrangle topographic maps. Recorder Plates were used to provide detail where land ownership acreage was too small to delineate on the topographic maps. The Vernal, Utah, telephone directory was used to obtain land ownership addresses and telephone numbers. The total land ownership acreage from this report was compared with the actual and potential flooded bottomlands acreage reported in the recently completed bottomland inventory (Irving and Burdick, 1995). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Floodplain Land Ownership Inventory There was and an estimated 48,485 acres [ac]) (19,621 hectares [ha]) of land in 111 inventoried sites between Pariette Draw and Split Mountain (Figure 2; Table A1, Appendix A). Most of these floodplain sites were Federal (60%) and privately (24%) owned land; with State (40) and Tribal (12%) lands making up the remaining acreage (Figure 3; Table A1, Appendix A). The estimated acreage ranged from 100 to 4,423 ac (41-1,790 ha} on Federal lands, from 10 to 500 ac (4-202 ha) on State lands, and 25 to 1,840 ac (10-745 ha) on Tribal and 4 to 1,423 ac (2-576 ha) on private lands (Table A1, Appendix A; Tables B1, B2, B3, Appendix B). Individual land ownership sites are documented on the NRCS's aerial photographs (Table B1, Appendix B) and the Division's color-coded topographic maps and county Plate maps. The aerial photographs, available at the Service or Division offices in Vernal, Utah, lack detail and recent changes in land ownership. The most current land ownership status is documented on the color-coded U.S. Geological Service (USGS) 7.5 Minute Quadrangle topographic maps and Recorder Plates (Tables C1 and C2, Appendix C). These maps are too bulky to include in this report and are on file at the Division office in Vernal, Utah. The address and phone information for the land owners is incomplete (Table D1, Appendix D). In many cases the person's name didn't appear in the directory. In other cases, especially when only a female's name was listed as the land owner, their name didn't appear in the directory, but their address and phone number could have been listed under their spouse's name. Finally, some of these land owners may not currently live within .the area the Vernal phone directory covers, and may have to be contacted in other ways. 3
