ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
We would like to thank the present and former Coordinator of the
Floodplain Habitat Restoration Program from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, Pat Nelson and Dr. Richard Wydoski, respectively, and John Hawkins,
Larval Fish Laboratory, Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, for their
guidance and assistance in developing appropriate research techniques and data
evaluation. George Smith, Regional Hydrologist of the Fish and Wildlife
Service, Denver, Colorado, and his staff provided hydrology support. Without
support from key personnel in the Bureau of Reclamation, the hydrology portion
of the study could not have been accomplished. Chuck Gallagher was
instrumental in designing and establishing the field-based camera-recording
equipment to obtain staff-discharge information. Terry Ayer, Blake Bailey,
Burt Ives, Bob Levine, and Ted Juntilla from the Grand Junction, Colorado,
Bureau of Reclamation Projects Office and Tom Jordan, Donavan Johnston and S.
Lujan from the Provo, Utah, Office of the Bureau of Reclamation surveyed river
cross sections. Pat Mangan and Andrew Montano from the Environmental Planning
and Assessment Branch of the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver assisted with
river cross sections. Bob Norman, Bureau of Reclamation in Grand Junction,
and Tim Modde and Frank Pfeifer, Fish and Wildlife Service, provided
administrative support. Both Bob and Jeff Baumgartner, The Nature
Conservancy, often offered useful technical advice to the project. Gordon
Mueller, Richard Wydoski, and Robert Muth provided useful comments and
improved an earlier version of this report.
We are grateful for the field work, assistance, and advice provided by
Steve Brock, Dan Schaad, and Kelli Stone from the Ouray National Wildlife
Refuge, and Tom Hatch and Gary Baker from the Colorado River Fishery Project
(CRFP) in Vernal, Utah. We would like to thank CRFP biological technicians,
John Rosendale, Sara Persselin, Chris Flann, Quentin Bradwich, and Bruce Bonar
for their assistance in collecting field data. Mike Baker, Mike Montagne, and
Greg Taylor assembled staff gauges and fabricated ammo boxes for housing
cameras for the hydrology portion of the study.
A special thanks goes to Greg Whitbeck and Mary Smuin from the U. S.
Natural Resources Conservation Service, Vernal, Utah for the use of their
camera equipment and photography skills. Carl Landini and his staff from the
Consolidated Farm Service Agency in Grand Junction provided office space and
digitizing equipment to obtain acreage estimates of bottomland habitat areas.
Dave Webster from the Farm-Service Agency and Doyle Dow, real estate
appraiser from the Bureau of Reclamation, were pivotal in working with local
landowners in the Vernal, Utah, and Grand Junction and Delta, Colorado
localities. We would also like to thank Randy Arment of Research Air, Inc.
and Hank Heines of Dinaland Aviation for their skill and safety in assisting
in the aerial reconnaissance survey work.
Aerial photographs of the Colorado and Gunnison rivers were provided by
Grady McNure and Ken Jacobson of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Regulatory
xi
