~, ~`~~
The feeding test in the 10' x 2.5' x 2' tank appeared to be more suc-
cessful as to the number of fry that died in a two week feeding period. irs-
timations and counts of dead fry removed when tanks were cleaned ranged from
0 to SO per day. Most generally mortalities ranged from 8 to 20 per day.
The major problem encountered was the saran cloth that covered the screen
plugged easily and quickly, Only once did the screen plug and overflow.
An estimate of 5,000 to 10,000 fry were lost down the drain. When fry were
enumerated and stocked about. 8,500 were missing from the tank. This method
of starting fry worked well, with the exception of the plugged screen, to
' to hold the fry until adequate zooplankton had developed in the pond for
the fry to be stocked. hopefully, this method will not be necessary in
the future years.
Rearing Ponds for Fry. ',
A 0.1 surface acre pond was started filling on February 27. Fertiliza-
tion used was 100 pounds of manure and 80 pounds of 18-46-0 on the pond
bottom before filling, and weekly treatments of 20 pounds manuare and 30
pounds 18-46-0. Water temperatures were in the low 50° range which was
not conducive to plankton production.
The fry were fed in a holding house tank on 50% protein trout starter
diet until March 23 at which time plankton samples whoed that there was
enough plankton to support the fry. After stocking, samples were taken and
stomach analysis showed that the majority of food items eaten for the first
three weeks were rotifers.
GENERAL OBSERVATIONS
Razorback sucker adults are very docile and present little problem in
handling. The method of grasping the fish on the Caudle peduncle area and
17
