Table 2. Backwater habitat formation classification categories and description
Backwater Type Description ~~
Secondary channel Habitats formed by the erosion/deposition cycle of
~
,
secondary channels during passage of a flood, and ~
revealed by receding water levels. Usually ~
relatively deep and permanent. ~
Migrating sand Habitats formed by the relative movement of ~
wave adjacent migrating sand waves. Usually shallow ands
ephemeral.
Horseshoe vortex Habitats formed by scour holes generated at high ~
flows at the upstream ends of islands due to ~~
development of horseshoe vortex patterns. ~
Moderately deep and semipermanent.
Shoreline eddy Habitats formed by recirculating areas due to
irregularities of the bank.
Low velocity flow Habitats formed by any of the above processes, but !
which are not completely isolated from main channel
flow, thus allowing very slow flow into the habitat

~ )
across a restricted area.
Isolated pool 4 Habitats formed by any of the above processes which
( are completely disconnected from the river due to ~~
decreased flows.
