through 1988. DNFH records indicate most of the Fl broodfish were derived from six to
eight 81-WILD females (two of which contributed 95.6% of the 29,815 larvae [hereafter
81 YC-Ft] produced that year).
Seventy-one wild females (derived primarily from 1982 collections but also including a
few surviving 1981 wild fish) were spawned in 1982 to produce 1.7 million larvae (hereafter
82YC-F1). There is no specific record for any of the 82YC-Fts being kept as broodfish, but
two lines of evidence make it clear that some were retained. First, variation of mtDNA for
later year classes cannot otherwise be explained. The high diversity (h=0.89) and number of
haplotypes per individual (0.60) in the 1987 progeny (87YC-F2s) aze evidence that the
females used must have included a substantial proportion of 82YC-Fts (see Appendix II).
The small number of females producing 81YC-Fts almost certainly resulted in a reduction in
diversity and must have dramatically reduced haplotype number in that year class, which
would have been exacerbated in production. of 87YC-F2s. Second, reference in the DNFH
Annual report for 1986 to "4- and 5-yeaz-olds" must include broodfish from both 81YC-Ft
and 82YC-Fl. We are therefore certain that Fls were retained as broodfish both in 1981 and
1982, likely more individuals from the latter, and contributed to later DNFH production (see
Appendix In.
In addirion to 81+82YC-Fls, wild fish captured as larvae in 1985 and reazed in captivity
(85YC-WILD) may also have contributed to production in 1989, continuing into later year
classes. Thus, the 14 females spawned in 1989 may have been derived from 81+82YC-Fts
and 85YC-WILD. The resulting progeny exhibited h and haplotype numbers similar to that
of 1987 (Table 4).
In 1990, the 526 fish in the broodstock were derived from 81+82YC-Fls (likely more
than 50%), 85YC-WILD (likely less than 20%), and 176 (33.5%) 87YC-F2s.
