Backwater habitats can be <br />~. ; <br />~~her sandlsilt or boulder substrate. <br />~~ <br />~°r Gray Canyon is formed by .the Green River cutting through the southern slope of the Book <br />~` Cliffs. It is not as deep as Desolation Canyon, but the river is just as restricted. The river is <br />confined between narrow, perched flood plains located at the foot of low sandstone cliffs. These <br />are, in turned, topped by rolling hills that fade away in moderate slopes. For it's first five miles <br />the river is slow moving with a predominantly sand substrate. Beyond this point it is punctuated <br />with boulder fields and gravel bars which create riffies and rapids. Banks are mostly sand. The <br />dominant riparian vegetation is tamarisk and willows. <br />4 <br />
