vegetated by tamarisk, willows (Salix sp:), cottonwood and: box elder. Backwater habitats can be
~. ;
~~her sandlsilt or boulder substrate.
~~
~°r Gray Canyon is formed by .the Green River cutting through the southern slope of the Book
~` Cliffs. It is not as deep as Desolation Canyon, but the river is just as restricted. The river is
confined between narrow, perched flood plains located at the foot of low sandstone cliffs. These
are, in turned, topped by rolling hills that fade away in moderate slopes. For it's first five miles
the river is slow moving with a predominantly sand substrate. Beyond this point it is punctuated
with boulder fields and gravel bars which create riffies and rapids. Banks are mostly sand. The
dominant riparian vegetation is tamarisk and willows.
4
