. ~ . ` ~'II
INTRODUCTION `~`~. ~~`"~~
Four fish species endemic to the upper Colorado River Basin are currently listed
as endangered by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). These species, Colorado
squawfish (Frychocheilus Lucius), razorback sucker (Xyrauchen texanus), humpback chub
(Gila cypha) and bonytail chub (G. elegans), are managed under the auspices of the
Recovery Implementation Program for Endangered Fish Species of the Upper Colorado
River Basin (RIP; FWS 1987). RIP is amulti-agency effort dedicated to recovery of the
four species while allowing water uses and development consistent with the Upper
Colorado River Compact of 1922. An integral part of RIP is annual monitoring of
populations to determine population status and trends. Although monitoring began early
in the 1970's, methodology and sampling locations were not standardized ,until 1986.
That year the numerous agencies involved with management of these fishes instituted the
Interagency Standardized Monitoring Program (ISMP). The intent of ISMP is to provide
standard methods of data collection which would allow for direct and completely
comparable information from year to year. Two of the primary aspects of the program
are spring electrofishing to monitor late-juvenile and adult populations of squawfish and
fall seining to monitor young-of-the-year (YOY) squawfish (productivity and growth).
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR), being the legal fish
management agency within the state of Utah, was given responsibility to conduct.
monitoring activities within Utah. This includes all of the Green River from its mouth to
the Colorado-Utah state line. Monitoring of the river south of River Mile (RM) 215 is
the responsibility of the UDWR Southeastern Region offices in Moab and Price. The
river above RM 215 became the responsibility of the UDWR Northeastern Region office
in Vernal. The information. presented in this report details monitoring activities in the
Green River between RM 215 and RM 334 and the lower. 21 miles of -the White River
from 1990 through 1994.
1
