Diet composition of norther pike was comprised of 5% juvenile Colorado squawfish, 72% other
cyprinids (shiners, carp, etc.), 6% suckers, 6% crayfish and 11% mice. A seasonal shift was
observed in the diets. Cyprinids declined in the diet of northern pike during the autumn while
suckers increased.
Bioenergetics modeling suggests that if Colorado squawfish represent 5% of the diet composition
of 1,000 northern pike, 188 kg of squawfish per year could be consumed. Numerically, the
highest losses are predicted to be 59,097-1 g squawfish during the spring and 21,885-2.8 g fish
during the summer. The only observed squawfish in pike diets were 1-yr old fish. If 1-yr old
squawfish comprised 25% of pike diets, 1,121 kg or~650,000 squawfish could be consumed.
These numbers should be decreased by 10, however, since our data suggest that the population of
pike in the Ouray section of the Green River is closer to 100 individuals.
ix
