Escalante Wetlands Water Chemistry
Water collected from wetland ponds, ground water wells and
the Green River was analyzed for cations and anions. The study
area is chemically complex with strong gradients across the site.
Conductivity of surface and ground waters in early July are shown
in Figure 14a. The northern area is fed by ground water from a
saline source and has much higher conductivities than the
southern area. A river influence zone in the area of stations 6
and 11 has very low conductances, similar to that of the river.
However, the river does not greatly influence the area adjacent
to it in the north. A series of ponds which appear to have been
dug for stock watering occur just behind the dike in a line
extending north from station 8 for a distance of approximately
300 yards. Conductivities along this line increase from 10,000
uS/cmZ in the south to more than 30,000 Us/cm2 in the northern
pond. A strong flow of saline water flows across the northern
study area from east to west. We anticipated that high salt
water would flow into the ground water trough described earlier,
but no evidence of this was found.
2.6095
2.609
2.6085
2.608
2.6075
-° 2.607
2.6065
2.606
2.6055
2.605
2.6045
~SCALANTE RANCH, JENSEN, UTAH
Conductivity, um/cm2, 4 July 1993 - =springs
~- N a3o 00
Terrace
j 1, 000 (eei ~ 2550
625 LoW
Terrace
azoo
5590
Wetland 4990
Escarpment 36so
21100 Low
Very High a21o
109b0 254
251 DiICe Ike 255
ery Low
Green River ------
76u.~ /61.5 762.5 763.5 764.5 765.5 766.5
761 762 763 764 765 766 7b7
(Thousands)
Figure 14a.
