INTRODIICTION AND METHODS
This report describes the hydrology, water chemistry,
vegetation and invertebrate biomass of the Escalante State
Wildlife Area along the Gunnison River, just downstream from
Delta, Colorado. The study area includes an approximately 1 mile
long stretch of the Gunnison River, its active channel,
intermittent channel, abandoned ox-bow channels, and agricultural
fields. Portions of the river are diked restricting interaction
with the floodplain.
ESCALANTE STATE WILDLIFE AREA ON THE GUNNISON RIVER
9
T N
old river
I 1, 000 teal I
Location of Sample
Staions
irrigation return
24N
river channel / backwater
4 SG 5 SC .{~ 19G
6 G B S S 21 (~>ap+~g~~
3C p
2 N irrigation return
Gunnison River
15G
145G 11SG
backwater 2 165GQ O Q
17S
1 C Pam
escar{xnent ~_
~ Roubideau Creek
Figure 1. We also installed 5 ground water monitoring wells (1, 3, 6,
15 and 19). Wells were constructed of 1 inch PVC pipe. Holes
were hand augured to reach the water table.
