Figure 14 presents data on sodium ion concentrations in
water samples from the study area. The distribution follows in
large part the conductivity data. Sodium is the leading cation
in some waters while calcium is the leading cation in others. In
general ground waters had higher Na+, while surface water had
higher Cat+. This most likely is due to increased evaporation
from groundwater which allows sodium to accumulate.
ESCALANTE STATE WILDLIFE AREA ON THE GUNNISON RIVER
~-- N
old rive
1, o0o rest
s.
Sodium concentrations mg/L
in surface and ground water
irrigation return
river channel ~ bodcwater
96 1260
1080 g
210 11
.~' irrigation return
5 4
Gumison fiver irrigation return
91.2
190
53
bockw""crier 54.6 ~ O r"1
1180 ~Pands ~/
escarpment '---
Roubideou Creek
Figure 14.
