Station 23 is irrigation return flow in a ditch and has
exactly the same hydrograph pattern as station 19, a groundwater
well on the floodplain. The similarity of their water level
patterns indicates that they are controlled by the same water
sources, irrigation and groundwater from the hills to the south.
The lowest level reached by water levels at station 19 are
similar to those of the Gunnison River, indicating that the base
level water table in floodplain gravels is controlled by the
Gunnison River and water tables cannot drop below the level of
the River. However, water tables can be higher, and water tables
need not be of Gunnison River water. Station 23 is an incised
ditch that enters the Gunnison River far downstream from staff
gauge 7, thus its elevation and base level is lower than the
river at 7.
16
