Figure 6 illustrates maximum flows for May and June for each
water year of record. Flows over 15,000 cfs are high flows for
the Gunnison River. Flows of this magnitude were common in the
earliest period of record, and were frequent in the 1950's, but
only two years, 1983, and 1984, had flows of this magnitude since
1965. Peak flow during May of 1993 reached, 20,500 cfs, the
second highest annual since 1957! Floods with enough power to
rework the floodplain were common prior to 1966, but are uncommon
today. Table 2 summarizes the frequency of peak annual flows for
the period of record. In the post-dam period of record flows of
20,000 cfs occur at a frequency of 10~ what they occurred prior
to dam construction.
40
35
30
v-
U 25
O ^„
J ~
4- ~ 20
..
~ ~
X 15
Q .
10
5
0
1920
MAY ~~
1904 1957
1941
1984
1993
1;
a
JUNE
1934 197 1989
1990 1900 1910 1920 1930 1940 1950 1960 1970 1980 1990 2000
Figure 6.
