PREFACE
The present study was undertaken to provide baseline
information on the hydrology, water chemistry and ecological
characteristics of-the Moab study area. It should be remembered.-
that four investigations of this scope were being-conducted
simultaneously. Thus, the depth of our work is more limited in a
-few instances then we would have liked.
Our data includes a full investigation of the surface and
ground water hydrology of the study site. This data is adequate
to understand the overall hydrologic patterns on the. site. Water
samples were collected for chemical-analysis. In many instances
samples were collected only once for. each station. -Thus, we have
no replication and can only say that-the data represent the
conditions-at the time of sampling.- However, the issues raised-
in this report are hardly transitory and,the data are a valid
representation of the site.
Site-vegetation was studied only to help stratify the site
'for hydrology,. chemistry and invertebrate investigations. The
vegetation is described in only general terms and standing crop:.
measurements were not taken.:- This was done so that more time-
- could be spent on the water and invertebrate portions of the
-study which we deemed-more critical to the fish. recovery program.
The water column and benthic, invertebrate investigation at
.the Moab site .includes 287 samples,- with replicates within-
- vegetation-type. Replicate samples within-each stand was-done
for water column invertebrates,-but we did not have replicates of
the benthic. community-because we felt that there-would be
insufficient time to analyze all the data. The data presented
-.are very interesting however, and., it would have been more useful.
if we had-replicates of each sample site for each date.
It .should also be recognized-that. the purpose of this report
is to present the data. Synthesis and integration-af the data
from all sites-will be presented in a separate-paper ,to be issued
later in 1994.
1
