RESULTS
The Study Area
The Green River meanders through the study area from north
to south. The floodplain in this area is more than 1 mile wide,
and most likely is the widest floodplain along the entire Green
River below Flaming Gorge Dam. Overbank flooding has occurred
frequently throughout the history of this floodplain. Unique in
this area are the well developed natural levees along the river,
and the relatively low basins behind the levees on both sides of
the rivers. Five major basins are named; Johnson, Leota,
Wyasket, Woods, and Sheppard. These basins are referred to as
bottoms or lakes in this area, but they, in their natural sense,
are parts of the floodplain. In the southeastern U.S. these
basins would support swamp forests, however, due to the hydrology
of the upper Colorado River, and the lack of annual flooding,
these sites support marshes.
OURAY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
\u / EPPARD
~~ BOTTOM
WOODS ~ 4 o s w of i eR 6 ~aoouaarERs
POOL ~ 3 R
(OLD CHARLIE 12 w
WASH)
~~ m~~
09 OW p
010 ow
WYASKET
KE YASKET
POND
SKETCH MAP OF THE STUDY AREA
(STUDY STATION NUMBERS ARE SHOWN)
N
l ' "'''' I
R
~ L1-7
cw
os eR LEOTA
BOTTOM
of
i ow
02 eR
Figure 1.
