Forty-five percent of the population are under the age of 18, and eighteen percent live on the <br />Navajo Reservation. <br />Navajo County had a 1990 population of 81,001. Thirty-eight percent of the population are under <br />the age of 18, and only 8.2 percent were over 65. The median value of a home in Navajo County <br />is $51,900. Approximately twenty-seven percent of the county's population lives on the Navajo <br />Reservation. <br />2. Colorado: Archuleta, La Plata, and Montezuma Counties <br />Archuleta county. is located east of La Plata county in south-central Colorado. The population of <br />Archuleta county increased thirty-seven percent from 3,664 in 1980 to 5,811 in 1990. The <br />county contains a small portion of the Southern Ute Reservation on which there are 20 <br />inhabitants. Approximately thirty percent of the population is under eighteen years of age and <br />twelve percent are over sixty-five. There are 3,951 household units, each with an average of 2.66 <br />occupants. <br />In 1990, the population in La Plata County had grown to 32,284, an increase of seventeen <br />percent over 1980. The majority of this population lives in the city of Durango. Twenty-five <br />percent of the population is between the ages of five and seventeen, while only ten percent is <br />over sixty-five. Of the total county population, 1,0171ive on the Southern Ute reservation in La <br />Plata county. The total number of households is 15,412, with an average of 2.56 occupants. <br />Montezuma County is located in the extreme southwestern comer of Colorado and has 18,672 <br />residents, an increase of eight percent over 1980. The majority of the population live in the <br />communities of Cortez, Marcos, and Dolores. Of the total population, 1,053 live on the Ute <br />Mountain Ute reservation. There are an average of 2.74 persons living in 8,050 housing units. <br />3.
